The 36th ASICS BRIDGES FUN RUN is a community fun run comprising a 5k event starting in South Perth and the traditional 10k starting in Riverside Drive. The event is organised by the WEST AUSTRALIAN MARATHON CLUB. Participants can either run, jog or walk their chosen distance.
This may be the last opportunity to run this historic course with the Perth waterfront redevelopment due to commence construction this year.
To accommodate initial construction activities, the start/finish area will be moved back to near Langley Park. The race will be run in anti-clockwise direction around the bridges. The race will start west of Plain Street on Riverside Drive heading West towards the Narrows, over the Narrows on the Eastern footpath, through South Perth and onto the Causeway before running back along Riverside Drive to a finish on Langley Park. The 5km event starts at 7.30am in the vicinity of the Wesley Boat Shed on the South Perth foreshore and does a short loop on the grass before joining the 10k course.
A free ferry is being provided that will leave West Pavilion Barrack Street Jetty at 6.30am and arrive at the Coode Street Jetty at 6.45am, to enable the 5km participants to get to the start (after parking near the finish area), in plenty of time on the South Perth side. A second ferry will depart at 7.00am if required.
The proceeds from the event are donated to CHANNEL SEVEN’s TELETHON and the total amount donated over the years is around the $650,000 mark.
It is anticipated that 1800 will enter the 10km event and 700 will tackle the 5km event, giving a total number of participants around 2500. Ray Boyd is the holder of the 10km best time of 29mins 41secs set in 2000 and has won this event on 16 occasions. The women’s 10km best time of 34mins 18secs was set by Olympian, Suzanne Malaxos in 1988. The best times for the 5km event were set in 2003 by Nick Fragomeni (15mins 11secs) and in 2005 by Pippa Hendon (17mins 14secs).
