Running is a relatively inexpensive sport but good shoes are a must. Feet can absorb up to five times your body weight when running so the right shoe is essential. Always seek professional advice when choosing and remember that most shoes last about 800km before their shock absorbers wear out.
Keep clothes light and layered. Those high cut shorts aren't a mere fashion statement, they are designed to stop chafing! For night runs it is advisable to wear something reflective or invest in a flashing light since it's important to be seen by passing cars.
It's a good idea to keep a running journal. It can be as simple as a few notes of the distance and time you ran each day, or more detailed with lengthier entries about your route, the way you feel, and the stuff you thought about on the run. By keeping a record you can track your progress and avoid past pitfalls.
For more comprehensive information see some of the great sites in our links section. You can also download an information pamphlet produced by our club's membership coordinators
In addition to our programme of events we offer Training sessions for different ability levels and anyone is welcome to come along.

Notes: It is recommended that 5% of each days run be run at a faster than normal pace. This amounts to 3 mins per hour. A tolerable increase in distance is about 10% per week. Maintain the pattern of long(one day), medium(two days) and short(four days), with long runs being 1.5 times the average and short runs half the average time or distance When doing accelerations during each days run, do them mildy fast to keep your legs from growing tight and rutted in a constant pace. Changes of pace should be energising not tiring. When doing time trials, concentrate more on holding a faster than normal pace rather than your final time and place.

The end of an era. Phil Ingpen, Jan and Bob Braid wish to announce that the time has come for their retirement from Runner's World. The shop will cease to operate at the end of February 2012. From the very humble beginnings in the front office of a real estate agency in Coghlan Road, Subiaco in 1979, Runner's World has been a lifetime experience for us where we have met and developed friendships with a wide range of people from humble souls to Supreme Court judges, athletes from Herb Elliott, Shirley Strickland to Rob de Castella, Steve Moneghetti, Greg Welch to the present day champions. However, the most important people to us have been our regular customers some of whom we are now serving their sons and daughters and their grandkids. It has been more than a business to us and we have tried hard over the years for keep Runner's World as something special and different, as far as possible from the sterile environment of many other shops. We preferred the warmer and more welcoming "clutter" approach to encourage social interaction - Steve "man of steel" Barrie often refers to the shop as an "Aladdin's cave". This is one of the reasons we have elected to close the shop rather than actively pursue the sale option. We welcome all past and new customers to come in and grab a bargain while you can or simply just reminisce with us. It is truly the end of an era.

SPEAKERS Richard Russell: Comrades Training Secrets - In 1969, aged 19, Richard followed in the footsteps of his heroes and attempted his first Comrades Marathon (89km). With no idea how to train for an ultra, he ran out of steam and bailed at 60km. Since then he has become an expert on how to run this famous race, memorising each bend and hill, knowing exactly how each runner should prepare in order to achieve their best. He has taken close to 100 Perth runners with him on this annual pilgrimage, which he has copleted 23 times! Running as an elite runner in the 1970s, he is content now to run for the love this great race and the spirit it evokes in all who take part. Chris Watson: Preparation and Recovery - There are marathons, ultra marathons and for the bravest of hearts, the 'Spartatholon', Chris was the only Aussie to attempt the 2011 245.3km race between Athens and Sparta. It's one of the most gruelling marathons in the world over rough terrain, with a time limit of 36hrs. He was one of just 143 of the 370 starters who finished. He crossed the finish in 34hrs 39min. Chris trained for 2 years for the event, running 200 to 250km a week in the lead up. He completed Comrades and the Kep 100km in June (a week apart) as training races! Chris will share with us how to prepare and recover in order to survive training and running at this level. Chris O'Neill: Racing Ultra Distance - Chris started 2011 by running 4 hrs 36m to break the 40 miler (64.4km) course record set by the lgendary Mick Francis. In June he ran the Comrades up run in 6hrs 37m. In September he finished top 30 in the World 100km Championships in 7hr 33m. He rounded out the year with top performances in every distance, ranging from 5km up to the marathon in 2:34. Chris will be running in the elite Nedbank team for the 2012 Comrades and again representing Ireland at the World 100km championships. Chris always makes time to help other runners and is credited with inspiring dramatically improved race times with his punishing techniques! Steph Martin: Dealing with Injuries' - Steph holds a BSc Human Movement & Exercise Science and BSc Physiotherapy. She has practiced extensively in Physiotherapy, OH&S and Rehabilitation. Ranked nationally as a tennis junior, and internationally as a senior, she saw the light and has become an ultra marathon runner! She completed her back to back Comrades with a Bill Rowan medal in 2011, which she says was the best experience of her life! As well as being a medical professional, Steph has experienced the disappointment of injuries first hand as an ultra runner, and will share with us her insights and tips.

If you are keen to get more involved with the club then there is no better way to do it than as a Race Director. There are several events on the calendar that are without a Race Director. Next year, if we are unable to fill the Race Director position for this event, then we will have to consider dropping the events from the calendar. If you are interested in helping out please give the Race Programmed Coordinator -Phil Webb a call. You will find his number and email details on the Team tab.
Note that entry forms are only required for Fun Runs - these will be advised as they become available

| 11/07/2010 | Wally Cairns 5,10, 15km X-Country | An enjoyable 1, 2 or 3 lap romp around the tracks of Kings Park. Starts and finishes at Synergy Park. Still possible to get lost (or at least off the course) if you don't keep your eyes open. Don't just follow the guy or girl in front - they could be going the wrong way. Cones are used to mark the way at crossing points and corners with marshalls at road crossings. 5km per lap - don't be tempted to pull out after one - do at least two. |
| 27/06/2010 | King of the Mountain | Time to get your feet wet again. This 16.1km event starts by the Helena Valley Primary School at 0800 and follows the Helena River up towards the Mundaring Weir finishing at Jacoby Park near the Weir. This is mainly on gravel roads through the water cachment but there are 4 points where the Helena River is crossed and re-crossed on the way up and generally at this time of the year you will probably get at least your feet wet. There are photos elsewhere on this site showing the King of the Mountain race from 2009 - have a look at them and you will get the idea. There is a bus that will bring competitors down from Jacoby Park so that they can make the start. The bus will leave Jacoby Park at 0715. Toilet facilities are limited at the actual start line so be prepared for a bit of queuing. Historically, this event has been a Handicap. For the first time this year it will not be run as a Handicap event. There will be a sweeper running at the back of the field who knows the course (which is marked with white lime indicators) so this should minimise the possibility of people getting lost. |

| 21/06/2009 | Perth Half Marathon and 5km | Last year saw record numbers for this event despite wet conditions. Here is one of the club's premier events attacting a strong field. The course takes you out to the University of WA and back on dual use footpaths with Drink stations every 2.5 km. The course is fast and flat with the only hill being over the Narrows Bridge on two occasions. |
| 07/06/2009 | Lake Monger 10km and 3km. | One or three laps around Lake Monger. All on dual use foot paths with a fair amount of shade. Watch out for the swans and ducks as you go. |
| 24/05/2009 | Challenge Fun Run 10km and 3.1km | This is the third public fun run for the year. Numbers have been on the up over the last few years so come along and join the crowd. Starting and finishing at the Challenge Stadium the route follows mainly roads making this one of the few remaining road runs for the club. The shorter event is pitched at the younger set but don't let that stop you if you are not feeling up to 10km. |
| 22/03/2009 | Darlington Half Marathon and 8km | The Darlington Half Marathon was the first race run after the club's formation. Must make this one pretty well the 40th! This is a great course - low gradient up hill for the first half out to Mundaring then turn around and come back very fast (if you haven't burnt yourself out on the out). The 8km runs the first 4km and then turns back. Watchout for the first 2km up and at the finish. Its on the original railway with some spectacular scenery and ball-bearing gravel. |
| 15/03/2009 | Bold Park 5km and 10km | Lime stone tracks that are a bit 'up and down dale'. The distances are also a little more (or less) than those indicated. Tough little cross-country. |
| 08/03/2009 | Neil Hawkins 5km and 10km | This is one of our few races for the Northern Suburbs' folk. Neil Hawkins park lies on the side of Lake Joondalup not too far east of the main shopping centre. Most of the race is on dual use footpaths with a short amount of limestone path at the outset. Both races are somewhat out and back but the 10km has more of a loop feeling to it. The paths are shaded and (with a minor exception) the course is flat. Watch out for the long-necked tortoises and bikes. |
| 01/03/2009 | Swan River Twilight | Another social do with a 5km run from the club out East, over the bridge and then back. |
| 08/02/2009 | Vets Friendship Run | This one is organised by the WA Masters. On the paths through Kings Park starting at the Adventure Playground (due to works on the normal start point). |
| 18/01/2009 | Ex Christ Church 5km | 5km version for those who don't aspire to the longer distance. Along the foreshore, up the hill by the yacht club then back towards the start with a loop round the common before finishing. This is a championship event. |
| 18/01/2009 | Ex Christ Church 12km | Starting near Steve's hotel, this race reverses the old Christ Church course. Along the foreshore, then up onto the road for a run through millionaire's row in Nedlands finally turning before the run up the hill to the school. This is a championship event. |
| 04/01/2009 | Burswood Twilight 5km | The first race of the new year. An out and back from the club rooms. Over the Windan bridge with a short loop on the East Perth side of the river almost to the inlet before returning to the club. Sausage sizzle afterwards. Note this will be the first race with new entry fees of $15.00 for non-members. Its definitely worth joining now! This is a championship event. |

The West Australian Marathon Club was founded on 13th July 1970. The Club's first race was the Darlington Half Marathon, held on 2nd August and conducted, as many of the first events were, as a handicap event. Since then the Club has grown to become the major running organisation in W.A.
The West Australian Marathon Club is the largest running Club in Western Australia. It has around 1,000 members. Very few of these members actually run Marathons, although many of them have at one time or other.
The members of the Club vary in age from under 10 to over 70 and and most live in the Perth Metropolitan area but membership is spread throughout the State, the Country and even the World!
The Club is run by a Committee of 10 members who meet monthly. However the strength of the Club lies in its membership, it is a long standing condition of membership that everyone helps out in at least two events each year. The Race Directors are also Club members and no-one is paid for their efforts except the Admin Officer, Nancy Reed. We also receive considerable help from our sponsors for which we are very grateful.
The West Australian Marathon Club is something of a misnomer. The Club conducts running events at all distances from 3 right up to 100 kilometres. In fact many people in Western Australia do not realise that the Club conducts events over such a variety of distances.
Having been born during the Marathon boom of the early 70's the Club has survived because it has adapted to meet the desire of its membership. The Club holds races on the track, the road and cross country. Although the Club programme may look very similar each year, it has evolved over time. There are now many more shorter events (sometimes 'supporting' a main race), there are relays and there are twilight runs. Many of these races have been member's initiatives. Some work, some don't, but the Club is always willing to adapt and adopt to survive.
Whilst the Club is basically a sporting body it does also raise funds at several charity runs during the year. There is also a 'social' aspect to the Club too. Training Groups meet up for other social activities, some sporting and some less so! There are also social runs on the Club programme too, the Matilda Bay Breakfast Run, the Pancake Run and the New Years Eve Run all spring readily to mind.
During the last few years we have seen the demise of other Marathon Clubs within Australia. So why is there a Marathon Club in WA? A State with a small population and very concentrated on Perth? To understand this you will need to know that the Club's origins were from a group of disaffected runners, who were, to say the least, disappointed with the official bodies who organised running in the State. This group of 13 set out with the aim to 'Foster long distance running and assist in furtherance of amateur sport'
There can be little doubt, all these years later, they have achieved exactly what they set out to do. That is not to say that the club has not had times of trials and tribulations, but it has survived and is a very strong sporting body.
West Australians are very active sporting people and that, to some degree, explains why this club has survived. Of course, the weather here in WA is very conducive to running, except for some of those very hot summer days!
Almost without fail there is a discussion at the AGM as to whether the Club should change name. In some respects it seems inevitable that the change will come but, then again, it may never happen.
Most events on the WAMC calendar are scheduled for early on Sunday morning. There are some races held at other times but they are few and far between. Club members seem to prefer to get their running over early in the day and then they can concentrate on family or other sporting events during the rest of the day.
Of course during our summer it is essential that events are held early in the morning and events such as Marathons are generally scheduled for the cooler months.
Racing is only part of what the Club does! There are also Training Groups. These usually meet on mid-week evenings, after work. However the Northern Suburbs Training Group has a strong tradition of meeting at 7 a.m. on Saturday.
True to its roots the WAMC is fiercely independent. It was formed by runners to conduct events which are well organised but with the minimum of fuss. This still holds true today. WAMC events are always very well organised. That's not to say that things don't go wrong, but they don't usually go wrong two years in a row!
The Race Directors are all Club members and are volunteers (some more willing than others). This means that they all know what pleases and displeases their fellow runners.
Club members turning up for a race wear a Club issued number, pay their race entry fee and ensure that their number is recorded as an entrant. It's as simple as that. For a Non-Member they merely have to fill out a form and collect a number. Non members pay a little bit extra. The cost of becoming a member can be saved in nine races!
All the Marshals and race Officials are Club Members so the events are conducted at low cost and with the maximum of good cheer! As finishers cross the line their time and place is recorded on a Chronomix and their number recorded and position noted.
Once the Chronomix printed tape has been pinned up on the mobile notice board, finishers can check out their times. Medals, generally to the first three male and female runners, are awarded on the day.
The results are usually entered in the Club computer by the end of the following day and are published quarterly in the Club Newsletter and here online in the results section.
