The West Australian Marathon Club

Run for fun & fitness - any pace, any distance

Welcome to the web site of the West Australian Marathon Club. The main aim of this site is to present members and non-members with information about the club - in particular about upcoming events and results of events already held. The site makes extensive use of javascript (particularly the jquery library) so if you want to see it in all its glory, make sure you enable scripting. For a short period of time you can also navigate back to the old WAMC site

The West Australian Marathon Club offers a year round programme of events for casual and competitive runners. With over 1,000 members from age under-10 to over-70 it gives everyone an opportunity to enjoy running regardless of ability in a friendly, social environment. Whether you are looking for a formal training schedule or simply want to improve your fitness you are most welcome to come along!

You can find information about how to join the club and also tips on starting out by browsing to the StartingUp tab

Please note that several of the tabs on this site use an 'accordion' style presentation. They will have a grey background header with a white expansion underneath the grey header. Clicking on the grey headers will 'expand' or 'squeeze' (ie, play the accordion) the white area. Try clicking on the grey header underneath this text and see what happens.

Starting Up

What do you need?

Running is a relatively inexpensive sport but good shoes are a must. Feet can absorb up to five times your body weight when running so the right shoe is essential. Always seek professional advice when choosing and remember that most shoes last about 800km before their shock absorbers wear out.

Keep clothes light and layered. Those high cut shorts aren't a mere fashion statement, they are designed to stop chafing! For night runs it is advisable to wear something reflective or invest in a flashing light since it's important to be seen by passing cars.

It's a good idea to keep a running journal. It can be as simple as a few notes of the distance and time you ran each day, or more detailed with lengthier entries about your route, the way you feel, and the stuff you thought about on the run. By keeping a record you can track your progress and avoid past pitfalls.

For more comprehensive information see some of the great sites in our links section.

In addition to our programme of events we offer Training sessions for different ability levels and anyone is welcome to come along.

Joggers Marathon Schedule

This programme appeared in the WAMC December 2000 Newsletter. It is again based on times rather than k's. It was a programme devised in the 1960's, by Joe Henderson, a US runner writer and has created a lot of interest over the years

Notes: It is recommended that 5% of each days run be run at a faster than normal pace. This amounts to 3 mins per hour. A tolerable increase in distance is about 10% per week. Maintain the pattern of long(one day), medium(two days) and short(four days), with long runs being 1.5 times the average and short runs half the average time or distance When doing accelerations during each days run, do them mildy fast to keep your legs from growing tight and rutted in a constant pace. Changes of pace should be energising not tiring. When doing time trials, concentrate more on holding a faster than normal pace rather than your final time and place.

The following may provide some useful information for runners

Looking for help with the timing system

The club is looking for people who might be interested in helping out with the electronic timing system. The system is used on Public Fun Runs such as the Bridges Fun Run, Challenge Fun Run, Perth Half Marathon, Marathon, Run For Gold and so on. The current 'expert' is going overseas for some weeks and will be absent through a number of runs. The timing system is based on RFID chips and requires help in setting up the timing system on the day of the run and running software that loads results into the club systems. Mechanisms already exist to accomplish the above and training will be provided. Really only needs a good grasp of windows files and file systems. If you can help with the Perth Half Marathon, Marathon or Run For Gold race please contact Phil Webb on 92795782 or 0413327287.

Comrades Marathon Results Available

You can see Comrades Results for 2009 at this site. Note that if you select Advanced Search and then enter Western Australia Marathon Club under team, you will pick most of our representatives. Congratulations to all that finished.

Find your own Club Results

If you go to the Results Tab you will find a new section there called My Results. If you are currently a financial member, you can enter your WAMC number and get a complete history of your results. There are a few 'gotchas' to watch for. If you have done the half hour or one hour races then the calculation of position is out of kilter (everybody gets a first I think). Apart from that, times, distances and average times are there for every race you have done with our club.

Photos (NEW 14/4/2009)

Kathy Garnett has provided some shots that she took of the 40 Miler (13/4/2009)

You can also look at photos on our Photos tab - quite a few races featured there.

Kathy Garnett has also sent us a link to some photos that she took at the Matilda Bay Race

Reminder about Race Fees

Don’t forget the new race fees are in place now:

Members cost $3.00 and $5.00 for a social event (ie, one where brekky is served).

Non-Members cost $10.00 and $15.00 for a social event.

After January, if members haven't paid up their membership for 2009 then they will be liable for non-member entry and will have to run under a non-member number.

Mistake in club programme for 2009

The club programme for 2009 indicates that there will be an AGM and Annual Social Presentation in November. This is incorrect. The 2008 AGM passed an amendment to the club constitution that aligns the club running, financial and membership year. The next AGM and Social Presentations will be held in early 2010. An amended club programme will be posted on the club web site as soon as it is available.

Marathon Club Nears 40

The West Australian Marathon Club is approaching its 40th birthday. The club has never been stronger with run participation numbers increasing year on year. 2009 will be the 39th year of the club's existence and in 2010 we celebrate our 40th.

04/01/2009 Burswood Twilight 5km The first race of the new year. An out and back from the club rooms. Over the Windan bridge with a short loop on the East Perth side of the river almost to the inlet before returning to the club. Sausage sizzle afterwards. Note this will be the first race with new entry fees of $15.00 for non-members. Its definitely worth joining now! This is a championship event.
18/01/2009 Ex Christ Church 12km Starting near Steve's hotel, this race reverses the old Christ Church course. Along the foreshore, then up onto the road for a run through millionaire's row in Nedlands finally turning before the run up the hill to the school. This is a championship event.
18/01/2009 Ex Christ Church 5km 5km version for those who don't aspire to the longer distance. Along the foreshore, up the hill by the yacht club then back towards the start with a loop round the common before finishing. This is a championship event.
08/02/2009 Vets Friendship Run This one is organised by the WA Masters. On the paths through Kings Park starting at the Adventure Playground (due to works on the normal start point).
01/03/2009 Swan River Twilight Another social do with a 5km run from the club out East, over the bridge and then back.
08/03/2009 Neil Hawkins 10km This is one of our few races for the Northern Suburbs' folk. Neil Hawkins park lies on the side of Lake Joondalup not too far east of the main shopping centre. Most of the race is on dual use footpaths with a short amount of limestone path at the outset. Both races are somewhat out and back but the 10km has more of a loop feeling to it. The paths are shaded and (with a minor exception) the course is flat. Watch out for the long-necked tortoises and bikes.
15/03/2009 Bold Park 10km Lime stone tracks that are a bit 'up and down dale'. The distances are also a little more (or less) than those indicated. Tough little cross-country.
22/03/2009 Darlington Half Marathon The Darlington Half Marathon was the first race run after the club's formation. Must make this one pretty well the 40th! This is a great course - low gradient up hill for the first half out to Mundaring then turn around and come back very fast (if you haven't burnt yourself out on the out). The 8km runs the first 4km and then turns back. Watchout for the first 2km up and at the finish. Its on the original railway with some spectacular scenery and ball-bearing gravel.
24/05/2009 Challenge Fun Run 10km This is the third public fun run for the year. Numbers have been on the up over the last few years so come along and join the crowd. Starting and finishing at the Challenge Stadium the route follows mainly roads making this one of the few remaining road runs for the club. The shorter event is pitched at the younger set but don't let that stop you if you are not feeling up to 10km.
07/06/2009 Lake Monger 10km One or three laps around Lake Monger. All on dual use foot paths with a fair amount of shade. Watch out for the swans and ducks as you go.
21/06/2009 Perth Half Marathon Last year saw record numbers for this event despite wet conditions. Here is one of the club's premier events attacting a strong field. The course takes you out to the University of WA and back on dual use footpaths with Drink stations every 2.5 km. The course is fast and flat with the only hill being over the Narrows Bridge on two occasions.
21/06/2009 Perth Half Marathon 5km A supporting event for the Perth Half Marathon.

26/12/2008 Parlouf Relay Just the thing for Boxing Day. Google Parlouf to find out what it is all about. This is a kind of handicapped pairs race. You and your team mate take it in turns to power round Hyde Park Lake for half an hour.
31/12/2008 Mizuno New Years Eve Run 10km This race runs East from the West Australian Marathon Club Rooms towards the Railway and Freeway Bridges. Crossing the river, the run continues East (the 4.0 km turns at the Bridge) until just past the Maylands Yacht Club (8.0 km turn). There is a Sausage Sizzle, fruit and punch after the run and two cans per man of light beer.

Read About Our Club

The West Australian Marathon Club was founded on 13th July 1970. The Club's first race was the Darlington Half Marathon, held on 2nd August and conducted, as many of the first events were, as a handicap event. Since then the Club has grown to become the major running organisation in W.A.

The West Australian Marathon Club is the largest running Club in Western Australia. It has around 1,000 members. Very few of these members actually run Marathons, although many of them have at one time or other.

The members of the Club vary in age from under 10 to over 70 and and most live in the Perth Metropolitan area but membership is spread throughout the State, the Country and even the World!

The Club is run by a Committee of 10 members who meet monthly. However the strength of the Club lies in its membership, it is a long standing condition of membership that everyone helps out in at least two events each year. The Race Directors are also Club members and no-one is paid for their efforts except the Admin Officer, Nancy Reed. We also receive considerable help from our sponsors for which we are very grateful.

The West Australian Marathon Club is something of a misnomer. The Club conducts running events at all distances from 3 right up to 100 kilometres. In fact many people in Western Australia do not realise that the Club conducts events over such a variety of distances.

Having been born during the Marathon boom of the early 70's the Club has survived because it has adapted to meet the desire of its membership. The Club holds races on the track, the road and cross country. Although the Club programme may look very similar each year, it has evolved over time. There are now many more shorter events (sometimes 'supporting' a main race), there are relays and there are twilight runs. Many of these races have been member's initiatives. Some work, some don't, but the Club is always willing to adapt and adopt to survive.

Whilst the Club is basically a sporting body it does also raise funds at several charity runs during the year. There is also a 'social' aspect to the Club too. Training Groups meet up for other social activities, some sporting and some less so! There are also social runs on the Club programme too, the Matilda Bay Breakfast Run, the Pancake Run and the New Years Eve Run all spring readily to mind.

During the last few years we have seen the demise of other Marathon Clubs within Australia. So why is there a Marathon Club in WA? A State with a small population and very concentrated on Perth? To understand this you will need to know that the Club's origins were from a group of disaffected runners, who were, to say the least, disappointed with the official bodies who organised running in the State. This group of 13 set out with the aim to 'Foster long distance running and assist in furtherance of amateur sport'

There can be little doubt, all these years later, they have achieved exactly what they set out to do. That is not to say that the club has not had times of trials and tribulations, but it has survived and is a very strong sporting body.

West Australians are very active sporting people and that, to some degree, explains why this club has survived. Of course, the weather here in WA is very conducive to running, except for some of those very hot summer days!

Almost without fail there is a discussion at the AGM as to whether the Club should change name. In some respects it seems inevitable that the change will come but, then again, it may never happen.

Most events on the WAMC calendar are scheduled for early on Sunday morning. There are some races held at other times but they are few and far between. Club members seem to prefer to get their running over early in the day and then they can concentrate on family or other sporting events during the rest of the day.

Of course during our summer it is essential that events are held early in the morning and events such as Marathons are generally scheduled for the cooler months.

Racing is only part of what the Club does! There are also Training Groups. These usually meet on mid-week evenings, after work. However the Northern Suburbs Training Group has a strong tradition of meeting at 7 a.m. on Saturday.

True to its roots the WAMC is fiercely independent. It was formed by runners to conduct events which are well organised but with the minimum of fuss. This still holds true today. WAMC events are always very well organised. That's not to say that things don't go wrong, but they don't usually go wrong two years in a row!

The Race Directors are all Club members and are volunteers (some more willing than others). This means that they all know what pleases and displeases their fellow runners.

Club members turning up for a race wear a Club issued number, pay their race entry fee and ensure that their number is recorded as an entrant. It's as simple as that. For a Non-Member they merely have to fill out a form and collect a number. Non members pay a little bit extra. The cost of becoming a member can be saved in nine races!

All the Marshals and race Officials are Club Members so the events are conducted at low cost and with the maximum of good cheer! As finishers cross the line their time and place is recorded on a Chronomix and their number recorded and position noted.

Once the Chronomix printed tape has been pinned up on the mobile notice board, finishers can check out their times. Medals, generally to the first three male and female runners, are awarded on the day.

The results are usually entered in the Club computer by the end of the following day and are published quarterly in the Club Newsletter and here online in the results section.

Get On the 2009 Team Welltech Sub 3:30 Perth Marathon Bus!

Its time to start training for the Team Welltech Sub 3:30 Perth Marathon Bus.
Every year Dave Henderson and his son-in-law, Peter Hughes, run the Perth marathon aiming for and guaranteeing they will get the bus (group of runners) over the line in under 3hours 30minutes. Last year was a huge success with the bus arriving a little ahead of schedule in 3:24. All runners who started on the bus group finished in the bus group except for one unfortunate soul (Dave Henderson), who had to stop for a toilet break at 32km and never got back on again.
The Team Welltech Sub 3:30 Perth Marathon Bus is a fantastic way to run a marathon. Each kilometre is run at near the same pace, last years half way split’s were within seconds of each other. Also there is the joint effort in training motivation and the sheer joy of passing all the people that went out too hard. I guarantee if you join the bus it will be a marathon to remember!
So if you want to be part of the highly respected Team Welltech Sub 3:30 Perth Marathon Bus for 2009 call Dave on 9353 1366 or email dhenderson@welltech.com.au now!
I am always willing to offer plenty of support, training advice and lots of useful as well as not so useful tips and wisdom.
